Pahinungód Baguio Celebrates 28 years
with Book Drive and Storytelling Training

by: John Rey Dave Aquino

In celebration of its 28th Founding Anniversary, the Ugnayan ng Pahinungód Baguio organized a book drive and conducted a storytelling training at San Gabriel, La Union last February 28, 2022.

Pahinungód Baguio, the institutional volunteer program of the University of the Philippines, donated 335 children’s books to the local government unit (LGU) of San Gabriel in a turnover ceremony. These books were collected by UPB faculty, staff, alumni, students, and friends of Pahinungód through a three-week period.

The donations included activity books, picture books, storybooks, and books of poems for children, among others. These books will be added to the municipal library of San Gabriel and serve as resource materials for future storytelling activities in its barangays. These books will be combined with donations from the Northern Luzon Educational Council, Pahinungód Baguio’s partner for the book drive, through Links Hob.

The turnover ceremony was accompanied by a storytelling training under (E-)Storyaan, a flagship program of Pahinungód Baguio. The program involves training volunteers on storytelling and producing storytelling videos with the aim of improving the reading skills of children.

Conducted by Markneel Balgos of the Department of Communication with ten youth volunteers in San Gabriel, the training covered the practice of storytelling through performing and utilizing the voice, body, gestures, and space.

As trained storytellers, this core group of volunteers, composed of Education students, will be assisting the local government unit (LGU) in improving the reading skills of children in San Gabriel. They will be deployed in the barangays to adopt a semi- or non-reader and submit a progress report to the LGU.

The event was organized in partnership with the NLEC, and supported by Adarna Publishing House, Museo Kordilyera, CordiTex, and E. Zobel Foundation.
